Re: JCO: Upon the sweeping flood

The original French title is "L'homme qui aimait les femmes", made in 1977. It's not one of Truffaut's finest films, but it certainly has its moments. It's on DVD in the UK, don't know about the US.

Dear Tanya,

I think I may have the answer.  At about the time the story came out, there was a Francois Truffaut movie whose title translated directly into English as "The Man Who Loved Women."  I saw the movie, with subtitles, and only wish I could remember exactly what the French title was!    JCO's story is a kind of bitter reflection of that movie, which was itself very charming, and about a man who had many affairs just because he was so crazy about women in general.  It actually begins with all the women he has had affairs with at his funeral!

There was a very poor American version of the movie, starring that perennial non-actor Burt Reynolds in the title role........and it was titled "The Man Who Loved Women."  One of those movies that just doesn't translate well from one culture to another....

Hope this helps some...
