i feel guilty relaying this because its gossip but years ago someone
reliable told me that his girlfriend told him that there is a trunk at
harperCollins with unpublished finished works by doris lessing -- a writer
important to oates. maybe its not true but i always felt the rumor's truth
lies in the fact that the great women writers of our time (lessing,
murdoch, oates) have OFTEN been resented for their work ethics and their
super-abundant imaginations. And have been pressured to curb it in. Even
to the degree that lessing & oates have experimented with second (and
third) publishing selves...
