That is interesting. The length of many does seem pared down in comparison to some of the earlier work, but the YA and thriller novels are necessarily short. I've been reading the new book of Conversations with Oates and it's interesting how she talks about drafts being so much longer than the published work. I guess a lot is typically cut out in the revision process.

I've read 37 of the novels and novellas. Part of me wants to save some for old age, though she doesn't seem short of producing new ones each year and Edmund White once said Oates had told him she'd already produced 2 novels to be published posthumously. This year is no exception and I'm looking forward to The Gravedigger's Daughter. I'd urge you to search out a copy of Do With Me What You Will as it's one of my favourites. It's quite a chunky piece of work itself.
