JCO: Re: A Bloodsmoor Romance
Hi friends!
Eric, I think I (and perhaps other people) had
trouble keeping track of the characters at first for
the same reason I usually don't read novels: I'm not
that interested in characters, physical descriptions,
settings, etc., and read about these with only half a
mind while I try to get to "the story." Some of us
just aren't programmed to appreciate novels.
Of course, once things really started happening in
Bloodsmoor, it was easy to keep track of at least the
main characters, because each of them had a story.
My paperback version of the book certainly looks
like a typical romance novel. On the back and spine
are the Kiddemaster mansion and gazebo, the four older
daughters, and Dierdre and the balloon in the
background. JQZ is there too, although at that time he
should have been on his way home. The front cover
shows Dierdre, and the carriage that took the family
to the fancy tea at the grandparents' house. Also on
the front cover is your typical "purple prose" couple:
a man in uniform and a woman with her dress falling
from her shoulders. I can't figure out who they are
supposed to be. Ah! Now I've figured it out--you have
to read almost to the very end of the book. (I have
about 20 pages to go!) Actually, maybe the carriage
goes with the couple on the front....
Thanks for the discussion.
All the best,
Laurie
