Re: JCO: RE: Missing Mom

I'm a little confused----this novel hasn't been released yet, as I understand it----do some of you have access to it?

RE: JCO: RE: Missing Mom

Hi Steve

No, it's not a Young Adult novel.
I tend to think we slightly idealize people once they've died as well. Of
course, that's not to say that the feelings of loss are any less genuine.

An interesting interview. I can't help wondering a bit about JCO's
statement that she has only positive feelings for her mother; yet,
fictionally, she's contrived to murder her. Well, having the death be a
murder no doubt makes for a more dramatic book. Is this supposed to be a
young adult novel? Somehow, I picked up a vague sense that it might be, but
there was nothing explicit about it. Maybe I'm reading the interview wrong.

JCO: Interview about Blonde

Theres also a newish audio interview with Oates about Blonde on the World
Book Club listed under previous World Book Clubs if you scroll down the
page.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/world_book_club.shtml

I attended this recording and asked a question but it was edited out, as
were many of the questions. I thought it was very interesting as I hadnt
heard her speak before about how she was dealing with the death of her
father while writing Blonde. After the recording finished she expressed how
impressed she was that there were participants from all over the world.
