Re: JCO: Interview

I really enjoyed the interview.  The photos of JCO were ephermeral and haunting.  She  has a lovely face.  It surprises me to learn that JCO identifies with  Ariah in "The Falls".  Ariah is  a monster.  Her surly reticence surely drove the minister over the edge.  Had she been more open and friendly toward her new husband maybe they could have come to an understanding.

Re: JCO: Interview

Hi, Anna. I haven't read that new interview yet but hope to soon.
Co-incidentally, I was just thinking about this issue earlier this morning. In Ariah,
it seems to me, JCO has placed some of the "less admirable" qualities of
herself -- the kind of "less admirable" qualities we all have and wish to hide or
disguise or deny. It seems to me that only the really great writers can
approach their own flaws, shortcomings, etc. and make memorable literary characters
of them. (Robert Stone, an apparently urbane, kindly, highly intellectual
fellow -- also a friend of JCO's -- is also good at spinning literary straw out of
his own personal issues: thereby creating some memorably spiteful, mean,
dangerous characters who nevertheless manage to touch the careful reader in a way
that a "stock villain" never could.)
Ariah has high standards and is very impatient with people she perceives
as weak or lazy. It's interesting to contrast this type of woman with the
"Joyce Carol Oates" to whom the character Maureen writes a letter in the novel
them.
What do you think?
