When JCO walked by me (sitting in the front row) from her way to the podium where she was speaking and the table where the signing was to occur, she smiled at me and pointed at my old paperback of The Triumph of the Spider Monkey. She said: "Very strange. Warped sensibilities." That is an exact quotation, verbatim. By the way, I've heard that JCO herself has tiny, tiny handwriting, but it's still good to print your name distinctly.

Re: JCO: Re: book signing

I concur with the others who have replied.  I saw JCO in Columbia, MO last year, and she graciously signed three books for me, including a limited ed. of "Lamb of Abysallia", about which she commented to me.  She was also kind enough to pose for a picture with me.  Courtesy to others in line is very important to me, so I and my companion made sure to have everything ready as we neared the front of the line so we wouldn't cause any delays.

Enjoy the reading!  I'm certain you will.

I think it is a wonderful opportunity to have her sign a favorite book. I was at a book signing a couple of years ago and the person in front of me had abou! t five books for her to sign. That was too much. When she finished with him it was my turn and I also had an extra book, a first edition of The Goddess short story collection. She signed both The Falls (the current book being promoted) and The Goddess, but she looked at the line of people going out the door and said she couldn't personalize the inscriptions because there wasn't enough time. So I would limit it to one book out of politeness to the others in the line as well as to Ms. Oates.

I'm going to see JCO on Saturday for a reading/signing for Female of the Species. I would like to bring a copy of my favorite of her books to sign  as well as the new book. Does anyone know if she would frown on this? I asked the bookstore sponsoring the event, and they did not know if she would be signing things other than the new book. I have a first edition of Son of the Morning that I would love for her to sign.

Re: JCO: book signing

I met JCO several years ago, and she was very gracious indeed. It was lovely meeting her, and my friend's former journalist mom even managed to get her in a photo op (I felt rather audacious there, but JCO didn't seem to mind, and like I said former journalists know how to do these things). I got about 3 books signed and it was no problem at all (also, my family got some books signed as well: they got the experience, I got another signed book....)

Have a great time meeting her :)

Re: JCO: book signing

To JCO fan in Barcelona-
Send JCO a letter in care of her publisher.  Comment on one of her books and ask her a question.  Enclose a SASE.  She will answer you and sign her answer.  That's how I got my first JCO "autograph," thinking I'd never have a chance to see her in person.  When I did meet her in person she signed one of her older books for me.

How lucky of you to have the possibility to have her signature!

Hi Chris,

She signed Man Crazy for me when she read from Blonde during the
Harbourfront Reading Series in Toronto a few years ago. So I doubt
she'll frown upon it, quite the opposite, especially with a first edition.

Re: JCO: book signing

I've had multiple experiences at JCO's readings and appearances.

She will graciously sign up to 3 volumes, regardless of when they were published.  The only restrictions put upon the signings are usually those of the hosts.

I think it's just a courtesy to purchase the book she's promoting and include it as one of the three.

First edition of Son of the Morning?  Treasure it, as I'm certain you do.

Re: JCO: book signing

I can second that, Chris. I saw JCO read last in the fall of 2004, and the
line for the book signing comprised mostly of people holding copies of older
books. She signed "Bellefleur" for me. The only restriction I can see anyone
placing on the signing might be one book per person? But JCO has never been
anything but gracious whenever I've seen her.

Take care,

Ryan.
