Hi, Kevin. Welcome to the JCO group -- TOne Clusters. How's the weather out
there in CO? THere's at least one JCO work -- a short story entitled "Small
Avalanches" -- that is set in your part of the world. It first appeared in
the mid-1970s in a collection called THE GODDESS AND OTHER WOMEN and I was
delighted to see a JCO heroine at last stand up and defend herself from predators,
which at that time I had not yet seen in her fiction. I think its title
"Small Avalances" was a nod to Marge Piercy's very feminist novel of that time
SMALL CHANGES. Most recently "Small Avalanches" was collected in a book of JCO
fiction dealing with young women, also entitled SMALL AVALANCHES.
Going back to that 1974 book THE GODDESS AND OTHER WOMEN: it's
interesting to reread the other stories -- many of which depict women in hopeless
situations and totally unable to figure a way out. The book really captured the
spirit of that era of "sexual liberation" when young women were thinking about
alternatives to the motherhood and children scenario that had previously been a
given script for most women. JCO explored the risks of being trapped in bad
aspects of the sexual revolution, the costs of freedom and liberation from the
old safeguards.
